A V port ball control valve uses a ball with a shaped notch that changes the exposed flow area as the ball rotates. As the edge of the notch passes the seat it creates a shearing action, which suits some fibre bearing fluids such as pulp. The shape of the opening also defines how capacity changes through the travel. It is built for sustained operation at partial openings, unlike a standard full port on off ball valve fitted with a modulating actuator. Particle size, hardness and concentration should be reviewed, because hard particles can wear the seating surfaces.
