A globe control valve regulates flow by moving a plug toward or away from a seat. The plug profile, or the openings in a surrounding cage, decides how the flow area changes as the stem travels. Different trim arrangements let the same body serve duties with different capacity, pressure drop and shutoff needs. Cage guidance keeps the plug aligned, pressure balancing reduces the force acting on it, and multistage trim divides a large pressure drop across several restrictions. The actuator must be sized for the shutoff load as well as normal throttling.
Common Applications
Steam service where trim is selected for pressure drop and noise control
Throttling that needs a defined flow characteristic
High pressure drop duties with cavitation or flashing risk
