A ball with a bored through passage sits inside the valve body, held in place by two seats rather than a fixed shaft, so line pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat to complete the seal. A quarter turn of the stem rotates the passage in line with or across the flow path, giving full open or full close in a single motion. Because the ball itself shifts slightly under pressure to seat properly, this design holds tight shutoff at smaller sizes without the added weight and cost of a trunnion support.
