A wedge shaped gate slides perpendicular to the flow path, dropping into place between two angled seats to form a tight seal when fully closed. Because the wedge shape forces the gate against both seats simultaneously as it seats, this design compensates for minor wear over time without losing sealing performance. Gate valves are built for fully open or fully closed service, where the straight through bore in the open position creates minimal pressure drop compared to globe or ball designs.
Common Applications
On/off isolation in pipeline and process service
Applications requiring minimal pressure drop when fully open
Water, steam, and general hydrocarbon service
Block valve service upstream and downstream of equipment
