A triple offset butterfly valve adds a third offset to the geometry used in a double offset design, this time in the shape of the seat itself, which is machined as a cone rather than a flat circle. Combined with the shaft offsets, this conical seat allows the disc to seal through pure rotational contact rather than the friction and rubbing found in concentric or double offset designs, producing a metal to metal seal capable of true zero leakage performance. Because the sealing mechanism does not rely on elastomeric seats, this design handles high temperature, high pressure, and fire safe service where soft seated valves would fail.
