A lubricated plug valve seals using a thin film of sealant injected between the tapered plug and the body, rather than relying on the metal surfaces to make direct contact under pressure alone. Turning the plug a quarter turn opens or closes the port, while the sealant film fills microscopic surface irregularities, reduces operating torque, and prevents galling between the plug and body over repeated cycles. Because the sealant can be replenished through an injection fitting without removing the valve from the line, this design holds tight, low leakage shutoff over long service intervals even in abrasive or dirty media.

Pipeline isolation in oil and gas gathering systems
