A dual plate check valve splits the closure element into two semicircular plates, hinged on a central shaft, which fold open under forward flow and snap shut the moment flow slows or reverses. Because the plates are lighter and travel a shorter distance than a single swing disc, they close faster, which reduces the slam and pressure surge that can occur when a full swing check valve closes abruptly. The compact wafer style body also takes up less space between flanges compared to a swing check design of the same line size.
