A standard needle valve uses a slender, tapered stem that threads into a matching seat, so rotating the handle advances or retracts the pointed tip in small, precise increments to fine tune flow. The long, gradual taper on the needle gives operators much finer control near the closed position compared to a gate or globe valve, since a small stem movement only changes the flow area slightly rather than dramatically. This makes needle valves the standard choice anywhere flow needs to be metered or throttled in small lines, even though their design limits them to smaller diameters than most other valve types.
